Looking inside Kim and Sander's home

Kim and Sander

There was a white kitchen with gold accents and we knew immediately, that's our dream kitchen

Kim and Sander live with dog Ivy in Haarlem. They were looking for a modern kitchen for their Amsterdam 1930s home. Kim likes the traditional style, which is reflected in the large interior doors with stained glass. Sander prefers a modern interior. Together they came up with the perfect mix. The house they lived in before looked out over the Amstel River with a large park in front of it. "I used to sit on a chair in the sun and I would love that for our next house," says Kim. Should they move again, preferably to a dike house with a nice green view.

Kim works as a Healthcare Pioneer Neurology for Janssen. In addition, she loves to bake. She even got to show off her baking skills on the television program Heel Holland Bakt. Adequate storage space for all her baking utensils was therefore a "must have" for the new kitchen.

After Kim and Sander visited a number of kitchen stores, a specific kitchen caught their eye at I-KOOK Amsterdam (Villa Arena). "There was a white kitchen with gold accents and we knew immediately, that is our dream kitchen." Still, they hesitated about dark green fronts, but were advised by kitchen coach Rachid not to choose a dark color. The dark green color would make the space look small. Besides, white is easy to combine. Perfect for striking out with colorful accessories!

Adequate storage space for all her baking supplies was thus a 'must have' for the new kitchen

The gold Quooker faucet and matching sink are the eye-catcher in this white kitchen. The advice was to place the sink in the middle of the sink island, but Kim thought otherwise. "This way we can use most of the island. Since I am incredibly fond of baking, it was important to me to have a large surface for baking. And also to film everything well for my social media channels, among other things." A handy tip! The fronts extend to the floor. This way the baseboards are concealed beautifully and practically.

In addition to the Quooker boiling water faucet, another eye-catching item in the kitchen is a 90-cm wide Siemens cooktop. "The cooktop is really great. I'm really glad we made this choice instead of a hood-in-hob. I felt that with an extractor cooktop you had to sacrifice both space on the plate, but also in the cabinets underneath. We wanted 4 big drawers of 90 cm and that wouldn't work then. Sander likes to cook extensively. On such a large cooktop with 5 burners you can put a lot of large pans and that makes extensive cooking just a little easier."

The hood is incorporated into the ceiling. "This was chosen because we didn't want a hood-in-hob or a traditional extractor. We were well informed about this beforehand. The plumber told us that 1.60m is the absolute maximum distance between the ceiling and the extractor. In our case it is 1.50m and from the pan to the ceiling the distance is even smaller. So we stayed exactly within the desired distance."
Sander also had a wine climate cabinet on his wish list. A real eye-catcher, according to him. But they ultimately opted for a quieter look, which they have now achieved with the island.

I am extremely happy with all the choices we made and how the kitchen fits into our home

"It was my absolute wish to have two ovens in the kitchen. One of the ovens also has a microwave function, which is ideal during my baking days. I can heat something up in the microwave while I'm already baking something in the oven below. I also like that I can bake more things at once and that for small bakes, such as a baguette, I can use the smaller oven."

"I am extremely happy with all the choices we made and how the kitchen fits into our home. I have lots of room for extensive baking and it's a wonderful place to have drinks before dinner. Sander is most happy with the huge cooktop."

We wish Kim and Sander lots of fun with their new kitchen! Thanks for the hospitality and the delicious red velvet cake. A kitchen where I am sure there will be lots of delicious things to bake! Kim posts many of her recipes on Instagram. Follow her at @kimiszoet
